Planting in a Post-Wild World Wins Award

Planting in a Post-Wild World by Thomas Rainer and Claudia West was award one of five 2016 Book Awards by the American Horticultural Society. We reached out to the society and the judges to find out why this book earned one of the coveted awards. Susan Hines, a garden communicator in Hyattsville, Maryland had this to say about the winning book.

Horticulture: What initially attracted you to this book?
Susan Hines: As a fan of Thomas Rainer's blog, Grounded Design, I was looking forward to reading Planting in a Post-Wild World by him and Claudia West.

Horticulture: With all the new garden books on the market each year, what made this one stand apart from other books on a similar topic?
Susan Hines: Planting in a Post-Wild World manages to address both big-picture issues, such as the loss of native plants and the conditions that supported them, while offering solutions that fit in spaces as small as the average back yard.

Horticulture: Why do you think this book will resonate with readers?
Susan Hines: Planting design is hard. Planting in a Post-Wild World provides guidance and a philosophical approach that will be welcomed by both professionals and lay gardeners alike. Readers will find themselves reflecting on many of the principles laid out in this booklong after they have read it for the first time.
