Shadow Magic Crapemyrtle Offers Mildew-Resistant Purple Foliage
We love the color combo!
Shadow Magic crapemyrtle stands out with its prolific dark pink blooms and deep purple leaves. Its glossy foliage remains healthy all season, with no problems like powdery mildew. Its naturally compact, shrubby size means it won’t likely require pruning.
Common name: First Editions Shadow Magic crapemyrtle
Botanical name: Lagerstroemia ‘Baillagtwo’
Exposure: Full sun
Flowers: Large heads of deep hot pink flowers appear at the tips of stems beginning in early summer. Deadheading spent blossoms will prolong the flowering into late summer.
Foliage: Small, narrow, dark purple deciduous leaves line the stems. The foliage is very resistant to powdery mildew.
Habit: Shadow Magic crapemyrtle grows 7 to 9 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, with an upright to rounded shape.
Origin: This cultivar was introduced to the market in 2023 as part of the First Editions Magic line of crapemyrtles bred for compact size, disease resistance and lengthy bloom.
How to grow it: Grow crapemyrtle in full sun and well-drained soil with moderate watering. Crapemyrtles are heat lovers that establish well when planted in warm soil. If you want to prune a crapemyrtle, the best time is late winter to early spring. USDA Zones 7–9.
