Bluesette Is a Compact Russian Sage for Small Gardens and Containers

A tiny version of the classic.

'Bluesette' is a new Russian sage that stands apart from the species and older cultivars with its controlled, compact habit and earlier bloom time. ‘Bluesette’ works well at the front of the garden—there is no need to relegate it to the back of the border—and it can also grow well in a patio container. It can bloom over many weeks in summer, to the delight of pollinating insects and hummingbirds. Its fragrant foliage makes it resistant to deer and it can tolerate drought once established.

Common name: 'Bluesette' Russian sage

Botanical name: Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Bluesette’

Exposure: Full sun

Flowers: Wands of blue-purple flowers top the upper portions of the stems from early summer into autumn.

Foliage: Narrow leaves line the upright stems with silver-green color. Brushing up against the foliage releases a burst of minty fragrance.

Habit:
A compact Russian sage, 'Bluesette' grows 14 to 22 inches tall with an upright stance.

Origin: Perovskia atriplicifolia is native to Central Asia. The cultivar 'Bluesette' was introduced by Kieft Seed/Ball Hort in 2023.

How to grow it:
Plant 'Bluesette' Russian sage in full sun and well-drained soil. Sun promotes strong growth and heavy flowering in Russian sage. Once established, this perennial tolerates drought. Cut old stems down to the ground in early spring. USDA Zones 4–9a.
