Delaware Center for Horticulture wins award
The Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH), based in Wilmington, Del., recently won the Founders Fund Award from the Garden Club of America, for its urban farm project. The DCH urban farm sits on 8 previously empty lots in Wilmington, in an neighborhood where fresh produce is generally not available. A system of 35 raised beds provides fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs that is sold at affordable prices to local residents. Some of the beds are also used by local families to grow their own food. The Founders Fund Award, which is decided by a nationwide vote among garden club members, includes a $25,000 prize, which the DCH plans to use to expand the urban farm. One goal is to build a hoop house that will extend the growing season. Check out the urban farm blog at delawarecenterforhorticulture.wordpress.com
