Garden Verse Poetry Competition
Thank you to everyone who entered our "Garden Verse" Poetry Competition. The deadline has passed. We look forward to judging this competition. Please note that winners will be notified by December 1. “Garden Verse” Poetry Competition
sponsored by Horticulture magazine For over 100 years, Horticulture has been dedicated to celebrating the passion of avid, influential gardeners. But we’re not the only ones – there’s an even longer history of poetry and poets inspired by flowers and gardens, from William Blake to Louise Glück. We’re pleased to combine these twin passions in the new Garden Verse Competition. These unique awards will honor new poetry from established and up-and-coming poets, celebrating and encouraging a real passion for gardening. Prizes
First Place: $250 each
Second Place: $100 each
Third Place: $50 each
The names and poems of the First Place winners will be printed in an upcoming issue of Horticulture magazine. Afterwards, the names and poem titles of all winners and honorable mentions will be posted on www.hortmag.com.
Extended Deadline: September 30, 2009
1. The competition is open to poems 40 lines or fewer. Entries longer than 40 lines will be automatically disqualified. Long poems may not be broken into segments and entered as separate entries. Each poem must be self-contained and must be titled. Both style and subject matter are open. Judging is blind. DO NOT include your contact information when you place your poem in the text box reserved for your poem. Entries received with names and/or other identifying information in the text box, with the poem, will be disqualified.
2. Entry fee: $15 for first poem, $10 for each additional poem. You may enter as many poems as you wish, but all poems must be entered at the same session. If you enter one poem or batch of poems and then submit another entry later, you must again pay the full entry fee of $15 for the first poem, $10 for each additional poem. Entries received without an entry fee will be disqualified. There will be a $10 fee for declined credit cards or returned checks.
3. All entries must be in English, original and unpublished. "Unpublished" means poems may not have appeared in any print or online publication available for public consumption (i.e., poems posted on an independent message forum or on a personal Web site are not considered published and may be submitted.). Horticulture reserves one-time publication rights to winning and honorable mention entries, to be published in a Horticulture print publication, on the Horticulture web site and/or in other digital materials.
4. All entries must be submitted online.
5. Entries must be submitted by September 30, 2009. The Online entry system will close after midnight EST on September 30, 2009.
6. Winners will be notified by December 1, 2009. If you have not been contacted by this date, you may assume that your entry is not a finalist and may be marketed elsewhere.
7. We cannot notify you personally of your poem's status before the winners are announced. This includes phone and email status inquiries. When entering online, you will receive a confirmation email for each entry you submit. Because the email is automatic, please look in your SPAM folder if you do not receive the email in your inbox. Please note, the emailed confirmation will come from hortcompetition@fwmedia.com.
8. Winners' names will appear in an upcoming issue of Horticulture magazine. Afterwards, their names and poem titles will be posted at www.hortmag.com.
9. The following are not permitted to enter the competition: employees of F+W Media, Inc., and their immediate families, and Horticulture contributing editors and correspondents as listed on the masthead.
